April,  "Kosmos-1000" was launched from Plesetsk.  October 24. "Interkosmos-18". Conduct of complex investigations on the interaction between the magnetosphere and ionosphere of the earth. Launched under the Intercosmos program by the USSR in cooperation with the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic, the German Democratic Republic, the Hungarian People's Republic, the Polish People's Republic and the Socialist Republic of Romania. On 14 November 1978, "Magion", a small Czechoslovak scientific satellite, separated from object 1296.

Historically, a little over 10% of Soviet space launches carrying the "Kosmos" designation have performed non-military missions. One of this was "Kosmos-1000".
